Chemical ecology How are plant secondary metabolites involved in biotic and abiotic inter-actions? With our model system, the submerged aquatic plant Myriophyllum spicatum and its defensive tannins, we investigate plant-plant, plant-herbivore and plant-bacteria allelochemical interactions. The concept of «ecological stoichiometry» is taken in to elucidate how resource availability affects the production and activity of plant defensive compounds, specifically carbon-based phenol compounds. A deeper insight into the role of allelochemical inter-actions helps to explain e.g. patterns in biotic interactions and plant community composition. E.g. invasive plant species might conquer new habitats using «novel weapons».
At Metz, I will specifically address how secondary metabolites are involved in the plant\'s response towards pollutants, and if chemically defended plants exhibit elevated tolerance to-wards these stressors. Myriophyllum is currently developed as dicotyleous aquatic test system by the OECD and the AMEG (Aquatic Macrophyte Ecology Group) of SETAC (Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry), thus our axenic cultures offer ample possibilities for controlled and replicated experiments at different levels of complexity.
